Title: Entry #4, Pages 86-115 of The Motorcycle Diaries
In this section of The Motorcycle Diaries, Che and Alberto travel through former Incan territory. While there, Che describes how the Aymara were once a mighty civilization that kept the Incan empires in check (93). Che also mentions that the Aymaras have been reduced to a race of proletariats. The Aymaras are living in such terrible conditions, that many of them are suicidal (93). If a large number of the Aymara were to commit suicide, then they would lose their lives, and the people who profit from the crops they grow would lose a large portion of their work force. Since these working conditions are likely caused by the organizations that buy Aymara crops (due to their reluctance to provide better living conditions because it would be expensive), it’s ironic, because in an effort to save money, the organizations are at risk of losing vast amounts of it.
On another note, Che mentions that many Chileans are immigrating to Argentina in search of a better life (87). Since Chile is a good place for skilled workers, it’s safe to say that only certain kinds of people, the proletariats, are immigrating. But what effect will the immigrations have on Argentina? Will it become a problem for Argentina, like it is for the United States? Or will Argentina benefit from the immigration? And will the immigration harm or help Argentineans on the individual level?
